“You are so lucky”, my friends tell me, “you must have health and beauty treatments all the time.” The truth is that, although I’m lucky enough to be running my own company, launching a grass roots start up like TreatNOW is a lot of work! I might be visiting alot of amazing places and talking to the great people running them, but apart from the obligatory summer pedi/hair removal/eyelash tinting, I rarely take time out to really pamper myself. So when I was offered the opportunity to try a bespoke facial with natural products and a massage, I was very, very excited.
However the only way I could justify taking the time out to do it, was promising to myself that I would turn it into a blog to share with you all. So here it is!
I haven’t had a facial for a long time, although many of my friends tell me it’s now a part of their monthly beauty regime. More and more men are also having facials now. Whether it’s for the boardroom presentation or Tinder, image counts and having great skin helps. So after too many late nights at the keyboard, I thought it would be an interesting to see what it could do for my skin.
I was a little bit late and arrived rushed and apologetic. Madhavi was instantly calming, She’s incredibly Zen and I felt immediately at ease. We sat and had a chat about my skin and my lifestyle and then I was welcomed into a beautiful treatment room, scented by one of her homemade Oud candles.
I lay down on the comfortable couch and my face was soothed and softened with a heated hot towel compress, scented with peppermint oil. It was both relaxing and refreshing at the same time.
A balm cleanser was then massaged into my skin, to remove make up and other impurities. When I say massaged, I mean massaged. Calm, slow, firm strokes totally relaxed me and made me start to feel quite dreamy.
As this was happening, Madhavi was assessing my skin for texture, moisture and elasticity. We had already discussed my lifestyle (not enought sleep – eek) so Madhavi explained the different processes and selected the correct products and oils to address my skin issues.
Then followed the extractions. My skin isn’t too bad, I suffer from blotchy uneven rough patches rather than loads of spots, but like all of us I have my share of blackheads. It’s an odd sensation to have someone squeeze your blackheads, and because I have such sensitive skin it generally leads to an outbreak afterwards. But techniques have moved on considerably since my last facial and I need not have worried. No break outs afterwards either.
After the extractions, Indian rose sandalwood serum was applied to quickly rehydrate the skin. It’s like giving your skin a glass of water to provide instant hydration and it smells divine.
Then I was annointed with a combination of frankincense, watermelon and rose hip oils to replenish and feed the skin. This mixture is created, on the spot, to suit your skin – each blend is bespoke and made for you during the treatment to suite your physical, mental and emotional needs of that day. Other ingredients include a range of active ingredients. Vitamins A and E, pomegranate, calendula, sea buckthorn are just a few of the ingredients available when your bespoke facial and products are being created just for you.
I wish I could share with you just how good it smelt! My skin drank it in.
This was followed a long deep relaxing massage, not just my face but also my neck, aching shoulders and décolletage. This was a proper massage, not just a few strokes. Deep, firm and effective. Like the oils, the combination of massage techniques is chosen to suit you. Each and every massage is different, not just for each person, but each time you go, to suit your mood and your needs. The massage techniques used depend on what it is you requires – whether it be movements to decongest, detox, lift and sculpt muscles of the face or to simply to relax you
Madhavi trained as a masseur at the same time as becoming a facialist, and she uses a mixture of Swedish, aromatherapy and deep tissue massage with particular attention to pressure points and lymphatic drainage to help get rid of all the toxins and impurities. Please don’t go with perfectly done hair, as you will miss out on the scalp and ear massage which was one of the most wonderful things I’ve ever had. I think I drifted off at one point.
Then two masks were applied to different areas of my face. I’ve always had a classic T zone, slightly oilier in the centre of my face. So the lemon and lavender mud mask was applied to these areas, to draw out any lurking impurities, and a hydrating mask with plant based collagen, was spread over my cheeks to hydrate and plump up the skin in the right places.
I dozed in a haze of bliss for a while, feeling somewhat other wordly, before the masks were removed with another beautifully scented, minty hot towel to wake me up. Finally my skin was nourished with a serum and rosehip oil.
Usually after a facial, I’d look blotchier, puffier and half asleep – but this time straightaway I looked more awake. Puffiness was banished, eyes looked bigger and my skin felt like silk. Plus I felt relaxed, unstressed and rather wonderful. I think I’m addicted.
Then it gets even better, you can take some of this magic home with you. Having got to know your skin so well, a few days later Madhavi goes into her laboratory and creates products to fit your exact skin needs. I was slightly anxious. Wasn’t this going to cost a fortune? I’m on a start up budget! I was amazed to find out not only are the costs perfectly in line with what I’m currently spending, I can also drop a product so it works out cheaper than my previous regime.
The cleanser and serum are so well balanced, you don’t need a moisturizer. So I save on time as well as money. I’ve been using the products for 3 weeks now and, as well as my friends, total strangers comment on my skin or ask where I get my botox done. (Haven’t tried that yet!)
I was told to go home and drink lots of water and to relax with a hot water bottle or wheat bag on my shoulders to relax the muscles. Then, once a week, I should steam my face and add herbs to the water for further therapy. It’s important to warm the skin gently, so that you open the pores and soften the skin before cleansing. To ensure you get the most out of your products, it’s vital that you prepare the skin properly, so each and every product you use can work to its optimum. Then exfoliate and apply a mud based mask for deep cleansing.
Madhavi recommends keeping your routine simple. Don’t bombard your skin with lots of products. Last but not least, spend a few minutes massaging the products into your skin – not only will this speed up the delivery of your creams and oils, but also the managing action helps to stimulate the circulation, which in turn will make your skin glow.
My skin has continued to improve and I can now see with my own eyes, every morning, just why a monthly facial is going on my “must have” list!
