Despite featuring quite a few hair salons in our interviews and features, we at TreatNOW haven’t yet done a ‘Treatment of the Week’ that centres around the topic of hair, that is until now. Balayage is a treatment so on trend that we just could not ignore it any longer. It has replaced ombre as the hair look of the moment and women everywhere are requesting it to boost their hair for the summer. So what is this treatment that has got all of the London salons buzzing?
The word ‘Balayage’ comes from the French word ‘to paint’ or ‘to sweep’ and that is very apt as it describes the technique perfectly. Rather than applying highlighted colour throughout the hair, right through to the end in chunks, Balayage is more of a freehand style of application. Small section of the hair are highlighted and coloured in an organic way to give a sun kissed natural look to the hair. Balayage is used mostly on the surface of the hair and so when the hair is curled or waved it adds to the multi-tonal look. It is not suitable for a short pixie crop style but works well on all other lengths of hair, especially longer styles. No foils are used to create the look and so you will need a skilled and experienced stylist to get the best results, but luckily as the technique is more widely taught in the UK there are plenty of great stylists out there that know the treatment inside and out.
The reason that Balayage has really taken off is because it is starting to be taught more widely in the UK and also because it is a look that celebrities have really taken a shine to. It is no wonder that they have, Balayage is a very low maintenance and yet effective and gorgeous treatment. As no foils are used and the colour is only applied to the surface of the hair, there is not the blunt look that you get with traditional highlights or ombre. This also means that when the hair grows out it is not very obvious as the Balayage colour blends into your natural colorings. The only thing you have to worry about with Balayage is to ensure that you protect the hair in the same way you would a normal colour, with colour care shampoo, conditioner and heat protection. Also, the method works on light or dark hair and, as previously mentioned, a skilled stylist will be able to determine what colour will suit you the best and style you accordingly.
As the go-to summer hair trend, Balayage is available at most salons in the central London area, which is also no surprise seeing as that is where most of the top stylists practice their craft. Bespoke hair studio Jönning and Riashi offer Balayage amongst a whole host of other up and coming treatments that they have learnt through their years of international training. Their urban hideaway in Fitzrovia is the place to go if you want to have an expert treatment with luxurious results but in a relaxed and laid back setting. Tomoyuki and Co might be nestled right by one of the busiest shopping destinations around, Oxford Circus, but it still manages to provide a place of calm and most importantly somewhere to get Balayage done. As they know each person’s hair and needs are different, they also offer a consultation service so that they can help you to decide which style, and colour of Balayage would best suit you. If you are really looking to achieve that celebrity inspired look for your Balayage treatment then WS Studio in South Kensington is the place for you. The fashion-focused salon takes its inspiration from the catwalk and uses your personal style to influences your treatment, they would certainly be pros at getting your Balayage done to perfection.
