Shoreditch-based vintage hair salon Jones and Payne like to think of their business as a fusion of East London cool vs. West London chic. With another branch in St Martins Lane, co-founders Ricky Lee Jones and Stewart Payne have fulfilled their dream: opening a successful, unique hairdressing business where every client feel relaxed and pampered, through their attention to detail; evident in their 2013/14 win of the London Lifestyle Award for “Best London Hairdressing Salon”. Luckily, TreatNOW managed to pin down these talented entrepreneurs, to discuss the motivation and determination behind such a unique business:

So, how and when did you guys start up?

Jones and Payne began in May 2010 by Ricky Lee Jones and Stewart Payne who both worked at Taylor Taylor London by Spitalfields. Ricky was Art Director and Stewart was the manager. It had always been Ricky’s dream to have his own salon and so the two decided they could offer something extra special by offering a west end service with a touch of east end cool. So, Jones and Payne was born.

What is your motto when it comes to customer service and how do you like to treat your clients when they walk through the door?

Every client is an individual and every client is treated the same with a 5 star service. It starts as soon as the client enters the salon and is carried through the whole appointment. We allocate an hour appointment on all cuts so that the client isn’t rushed. They can enjoy an exceptional head massage as well as massage on our backwash seats. We have an extensive list of drinks including proper coffee and in the evening we offer drinks including a cocktail of the month along with nibbles!

The whole atmosphere is relaxed down to earth but professional with a great soundtrack whilst you unwind from your day.

What sets your salon apart from the rest?

What makes us different is that we go the extra mile! It’s that attention to detail that makes us stand out (we even have bag hooks under each section so the clients bag don’t get covered in hair).

We treat our clients like friends. That’s why they come back to us time and time again.

That’s great and it sounds like you really love your job! So for our readers looking to become successful in their careers, what advice would you give to them in order to become as successful as you?

The best tip we can give is to make it [your dream] your obsession and give it your all! Long hours and hard graft is what makes it successful. And an amazing team behind you are all key to success.

What looks would you say are quite popular at the moment?

Women definitely want more carefree, good looking hair! They want something they can recreate at home; something that is going to last. With such busy schedules it’s all about ease of styling something that takes 5 minutes but looks like you have spent time on it.

Long tussled bobs, grown out fringes and of course Balayage (dip dye) are all very in at the moment.

The Keratin blow dry is also one that is becoming more and more popular with women as it cuts down blow drying time and tames frizzy/fly away hair.

For guys we are seeing a lot more tailored cuts, with the emphasis on barbering, taking the cut sharp but leaving a bit on top to quiff. Really textured crops are also very popular.

They want something that is going to last and grow out well.

How do you keep your clientele interested in your salon and what do you think is key to maintaining business?

We do a lot of marketing! You have to [as] it’s so competitive. We offer a loyalty card to all clients; a recommend a friend card.

We also do a lot on social media and at the moment we are concentrating on a new promo called #staylocal where it’s all about local businesses and the surrounding areas. Supporting local businesses and offering a 10% discount.

Also tools like Google Adwords and being in Time Out or any press really helps to drive business.

What do you think is key to starting up a successful business?

[Our] best advice is to start small and really get to know your target market! Walk before you run and concentrate on what you know best.

Attention to detail is key and it’s important to stay ahead of the game.

It’s about never getting complacent and always looking at ways to improve.

And finally moving forward, what are your plans? Anything new to look out for?

At Jones and Payne, we are constantly developing ideas and coming up with ways to improve the service we provide.

I think the Keratin blow dry will be bigger this year as it’s really improved and become much less time consuming for the client.

We also have a couple of up and coming stylists that are injecting a fresh new approach to hairdressing and creating excitement within the salon.
