She runs Hollywood Hair and Beauty in Wishaw, near Glasgow in Scotland and offers mobile hairdressing, make up, airbrush tanning & lashes. At just 26, she has built a successful and well respected business. Her specialities are weddings, proms and balls and super glam nights out.
“That’s me just finished from 8.30am this morning, making all you ladies look gorgeous and again for round 2 tomorrow..
Today we had 3 cut & colours 1 haircut, 3 hair ups and 3 makeups
Tomorrow we have 5 hair ups, 2 sets of lashes and 3 make ups. And on Sunday we have 1 hair up 1 makeup and a cut and colour”
As far as I can see, she’s keeping to that schedule every day until Christmas and beyond – she’s booked up for Hogmanay! Yet she remains totally cheerful and nothing is too much trouble. She has a huge range of clients, including; making working women fit for the red carpet, traveler girls look like princesses on their wedding day and creating glamorous Bollywood queens. She’s got it all covered from traditional to wacky; and she loves every moment.
This year Laura was proud to join the Hair Council Board. You can find out more about their important work here.
2. Why and when did you decide to be a sole trader or a company?
I ran a busy hairdressers on a set wage and then I realised I could run my own business, as I was basically doing that in the salon. I wanted to work my own hours and decide when I could take my holidays.
3. What makes your service special?
I offer extensive services and I also travel to the customer. I specialise in weddings, so I have great contacts and lots of companies in Scotland recommend me, as I take the time to get to know fellow businesses working alongside me.
4. Did you or your company prepare a Christmas marketing campaign and what did you do?
No. I was already fully booked by September.
5. What’s your preferred ways of communicating with clients?
We like to be flexible and talk to our clients via phone, text, email, Facebook and Twitter.
6. What’s your biggest challenge in 2015?
To become a well-known hairdresser.
7. What’s your hidden talent?
I’m a great organiser. I don’t forget anything. I can tell you what every customer gets done without looking at their record card. Apart from making people look glamorous, we can also use make up to disguise blemishes and tattoos for special days.
8. What your proudest business achievement in 2014?
Becoming part of the Hairdressing Council. I feel strongly about what they stand for and hope I can help spread their influence in Scotland.
9. What’s your oddest request?
I once had a bridal party who wanted to look like clowns. Ha-ha!! They wanted bright red lips, bright pink cheeks and black eye shadow.
10. What’s your favourite piece of business advice to pass on?
Never doubt your abilities. If you dream big enough, it will come your way. Don’t be frightened of competition. There’s room for success for everyone.
