Deborah Granville runs DezEvents  – a company with 15 years of experience of arranging fabulous events.  Deborah has to look polished at all times; and she introduced me to Hannah from Storksen Nordic Nail Lounge in North London.

Hannah Storksen-Coulson, 28, opened Storksen Nordic Nail Lounge in June 2013 with her mum Brit Størksen. Specialising in nails, Storksen offers top treatments in an elegant, Scandinavian setting.

  1. imageHow did you start your career in beauty ?

While on holiday two and a half years ago, I had the PERFECT pedicure and couldn’t understand why this wasn’t something I could get at home. When I got back, I approached my mum and asked if she wanted to go into business with me. Straight away, I knew I wanted to go with a Nordic feel and Størksen is my mum’s surname. So, being a family business, it just fitted.

  1. Why and when did you decide to be a sole trader or a company?

I decided I wanted to work for myself, after 5 years in a corporate job that didn’t suit me. I wanted something more flexible, but also love that working for yourself. That means you get out what you put in.

  1. imageWhat makes your service special?

I think, most importantly, we provide fantastic customer service. Making clients feel special and welcome is such an important part of a treatment. We also have brilliant therapists and a gorgeous, relaxing environment where people really feel at home.

  1. Did you or your company prepare a Christmas marketing campaign and what did you do?

Not really. We prepared OPI gift bags, which make great Christmas presents and ordered lots of extra gift vouchers! We also give a £10 gift card to all of our clients to use in January; which is a nice treat for them, but also keeps us busy after the Christmas rush.

  1. What’s your preferred ways of communicating with clients?

Our clients can either book online, over the phone or pop in. I prefer talking to people though, as it’s more personal. We also send text reminders and email to ask for feedback after the appointment.

  1. imageWhat’s your biggest challenge in 2015?

We are hoping to start full body massage and facials next year. At the moment, we are renovating the treatment rooms to make them nice and luxurious; and doing more spa-type treatments will be a new challenge for us.

  1. What’s your hidden talent?

I don’t think I have one, but I do like to cook and bake.

  1. What your proudest business achievment in 2014?

imageDefinitely the salon’s 1st birthday in June. To have reached that milestone with all of our original staff, plus one new one, was amazing. It was an exciting and emotional day and we had a great night out to celebrate.

  1. What’s your oddest request?

Oh gosh… It’s not really odd and this wasn’t me personally, but one of our girls was delighted to spray-tan a male body-builder!

  1. What’s your favourite piece of business advice to pass on?

My favourite advice, which I doll out often, is just go for it! So many clients question me about the business, as they want to start out on their own, and I say just do it. You regret what you didn’t do more that what you did and I’ve never looked back. Mind you, I’m very lucky as I have a fantastic partner in my mum. I couldn’t have done it alone.
