Last Friday I had a deep tissue massage from one of my favourite companies: Nico Tailored Therapies. It’s owned by the legendary Nico and she ensures all her therapists are up to her very high standard and distinctive style of super deep tissue massage. This is not for lightweights! I was introduced to Nico two years ago by friends at British Military Fitness, who were all raving about her. A running injury had left me unable to run for two months. After only three massages I was back running and I was hooked.

After 2 months on crutches this spring, (skiing injury this time!) my damaged knee and my crutches-ravaged back, have needed regular treatments.

On Friday, I met Monica. She is certified in Holistic, Deep Tissue, Seated Acupressure, Indian Head and Thai Yoga Massage. Whilst travelling, she also attended other massage courses in Thailand and Indonesia, as well as Tibetan Buddhist Meditation in Nepal and Ashtanga Yoga in India.

She is currently studying Shiatsu at Ki Kai School in London. So, like all Nico’s therapists, she can use all of her experience to do whatever is best for you.

I’d had too many late nights at the keyboard and my muscles were all knotted up. I had been in agony all week and yet, within 50 minutes, she had worked her magic, I felt 3 inches taller and the pain had gone. It’s still gone and I can sleep properly again.

imageLet’s find out more about Nico:

1. Why did you become a deep tissue masseur?
I went to work with the PA Knights (an American football team) and discovered that remedial massage was the way forward for natural and effective holistic healing.

2. Why and when did you decide to expand into a company?
People started coming back to me more and more; reporting successful outcomes and it amazed me that something so simple and so used throughout history, is so effective in our daily lives. I just wanted to share this secret with everybody. You could say I found my true calling! ;-). It wasn’t until I met brilliant therapists who covered my maternity leave, that I realised I could train other therapists to work like me and get help in delivering these much needed treatments to a wider audience. So, really, early 2008.image

3. What makes Nico Tailored Therapies special?
We have a range of effective treatments to help with health issues as well as the usual issues such as the stresses and strains of the body in today’s modern, demanding and hectic lifestyle. It’s amazing that a treatment used as early as 2330 BC is as effective today as it was then. I have found that through deep tissue massage therapy, the healing effects of aromatherapy and reflexology massage; we help many people reach and maintain homeostasis – a state of physiological equilibrium obtained when tension or a drive has been reduced or eliminated.

Lymphatic drainage is another popular treatment, it really helps bring down inflammation and is very popular with models and celebrities as it makes your skin look amazing. So much so that we offer a natural facelift massage – much nicer than a scalpel.image

4. What’s our preferred ways of communicating with clients?
We primarily use email. We have a weekly email with tips and healthy information.  As Hippocrates said about the health benefits of whole food diets, juicing and superfoods: “Let food be thy medicine!”  … it’s done wonders for me and I just love it!

We also send last minute alerts and offer short term availability. We plan to get some training and use twitter and facebook more in 2015.  And we can’t wait for TreatNOW to launch of course!

5. Did you prepare a Christmas marketing campaign?
Nothing special, but we do offer gift certificates online, secret Santa ideas, 30 minute taster certificates and membership offers. What could be better than the gift of well being!image

6. What’s your biggest challenge in 2015?
To reach more people!

image7. What’s your hidden talent?
I entered Miss Galaxy Universe 2014 in June of this year. It was great to have a target to aim for. I worked my butt off and really enjoyed throwing myself into the training. It was a fantastic experience, the other women were so supportive and I got to meet ex-Gladiator Saracen!

8. What your proudest business achievement in 2014?
Wow! … finding a great team of therapists. It’s not easy to find therapists who have that natural ability to ‘see with their hands’ and I have very high standards. This year, I guess I would say how proud I am that we have reached so many people with effective treatments; and it shows … we have a very loyal and appreciative client base – what we do with our remedial therapy REALLY WORKS!

9. What’s your oddest request?
TUMMY RUB! Oh My! From time to time we get a call for a “Tummy Rub”. The first time this happened I was so naive. I booked an appointment for someone who I thought had an issue with their stomach. I was politely asked to “go a little lower” … and the look of shock on my face when I realized what the client wanted must have been a real kodak moment! I quickly regrouped and decided I would demonstrate the real nature of a true “deep tissue massage” … there were tears, I assure you! But, I bet the client felt AMAZING after three days!
Hahaha serve them right!

10. What’s your favourite piece of business advice to pass on?
Room rental! Never rent a room where there are competitive businesses offering similar or the same therapies as you.

And what do you wish you’d known when you started out?
How hard it actually is to grow a business. Decide if you want to be in business or therapy – both are incredibly rewarding and you must choose to do what you love!

You can book a treatment at one of Nico’s 4 locations or her team can come to you:

  • Fenchurch Street
  • Tower Bridge
  • Knightsbridge
  • St Mary’s Axe

TreatNOW is recruiting a range of health therapists, stylists and beauticians for a Spring launch. Get in touch to find out more.
